Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department (CMPD) reported an active investigation happening in the North Tryon Division on Monday afternoon after several shots were fired in the area.

The statement, shared via X – formerly Twitter – said multiple law enforcement officers were struck by gunfire in the 5,000 block of Galway Drive, according to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department.

The initial alert incorrectly stated the location as “Galloway Drive,” CMPD said.

As of 2 p.m., CMPD said it was an active scene. Residents in the area were encouraged to stay inside their homes. Pedestrians were told to avoid the area.

Many streets throughout the city were closed or blocked off to allow faster ambulance and emergency response vehicles to the area.

Residents nearby reported street closures and an increased police presence around 3 p.m.

CMPD also said that SWAT was on the scene.

At around 3:20 p.m., CMPD said roads were still delayed, and the scene was still active.

This is a developing story; check back for updates.

Around 5 p.m., CMPD said, “The residence on Galway Drive is now clear, and the area is safe. Residents no longer need to shelter in place” via a statement on X.

The same statement announced that “at least one shooting suspect was located deceased at the residence” once the scene had been cleared. Two other occupants of the home were questioned.
