Millions of dollars in federal tax refunds remain unclaimed in North Carolina as the deadline approaches.

The IRS estimates more than $29 million in refunds remain unclaimed in North Carolina because 27,500 people haven’t filed their 2020 federal tax returns yet, according to a statement from the IRS.

The average refund for 2020 is $932, according to the statement.

In addition, as many as 175,000 eligible North Carolinians have not claimed the 2020 or 2021 COVID-era Recovery Rebate Credits, also known as stimulus payments.

According to the IRS, there is no penalty for claiming a refund on a late-filed tax return.

Taxpayers have until May 17 to claim any unclaimed 2020 federal refunds.
