A local YMCA, through a partnership with Atrium Health, is bringing healthcare to their facility in the West Boulevard Corridor.

The Ed Brown Community Center opened at the Stratford Richardson YMCA on March 18. It houses a new community healthcare clinic officially named The Atrium Health Community Care Primary Care West Boulevard Family Medicine Clinic.

The new 5,000-square-foot clinic will have six exam rooms, a minor surgical procedure room, a lab and on-site prescription pick-up.

The clinic will provide pediatric care, women’s care, preventive health care, physicals, x-rays, hearing and vision screenings, and more.

It will also offer a food pharmacy in partnership with Nourish Up — formerly named Loaves & Fishes — and, beginning in April, virtual behavioral healthcare will be offered.

“Growing up, I witnessed firsthand the lack of resources in [the West Boulevard Corridor] compared to others in Charlotte. I am thrilled that years later, I get to be a part of this amazing announcement that represents a long-needed resource for the West Boulevard residents,” Jemarion Young, the new Executive Director of the Stratford Richardson YMCA, said.

“Many residents here have struggled to access healthcare for years — many by finances, lack of transportation and fear. By providing them with quality healthcare, I hope that we can improve the social determinants of health for the residents of this community.”

The clinic was named after prominent Charlotte business leader and selfless philanthropist Edward J. Brown III, who died in April 2023.

Brown served the Charlotte community in multiple ways, including 19 years as part of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Hospital Authority Board of Commissioners, which he chaired from 2013-2021.

The community center and family medicine clinic were funded partially by a $2 million federal appropriation secured by Congresswoman Alma S. Adams and funds allocated from philanthropist MacKenzie Scott in 2020, according to a statement from Atrium Health.

“Health care is one of my ‘four H’s,’ a signature focus for my office, especially when it comes to expanding access to care in disadvantaged communities,” Congresswoman Alma S. Adams said in a statement. “The $2 million we secured to help transform the Stratford Richardson YMCA into a health community campus will be vital to our West Boulevard corridor community.”

The Ed Brown Community Center will be open for patients Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
