These are some of the incidents reported by the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department (CMPD) for the week of Sept. 17. This list is updated as reports are filed.

63-year-old woman killed by Amtrak train
A 63-year-old woman was struck and killed by a Amtrak passenger train lateFriday after she climbed out of a car to lift a crossing gate, which was in the down position and flashing red.

The incident was reported shortly after 9 p.m. in the 1600 block of McLean Road near Old Concord Road.

According to CMPD, Sarah Weagba Doe was a passenger in a white Chevrolet Equinox that had stopped at the crossing gate. She got out of the car and lifted the gate so that the car could cross. After the car had crossed, Doe was walking across the tracks to get back into the car when the train killed her.

Police make arrests for vehicle break-ins
Police in the Steel Creek Division arrested four people who, according to CMPD, were seen breaking into cars.

On Friday, a woman in the 600 block of Sharview Circle called police after she heard her car alarm going off and saw a man standing near the car with its door open. The woman banged on a window in her home and the suspect ran, going toward Nations Ford Road. Police searched the area and arrested Malik Marquise White, 19, and charged him with breaking and entering of a motor vehicle.

On Thursday, a witness called 911 to report suspects breaking into cars at an apartment in the 7600 block of Cormwell Lane. When police arrived, they found a car that had been broken into and arrested three people – Demarco Fonte Blair, 28; Hakeem Darnell Dickens, 25; and Janay Monique Kirksey, 16.

Blair and Dickens were charged with six counts of breaking and entering of a motor vehicle. Kirksey was charged with possession of stolen goods and possession of a stolen motor vehicle.

Pedestrian struck and killed
A 52-year-old man died Friday after he was struck by a car while trying to cross N. Tryon Street, police in the University City Division reported. The incident happened at about 5:44 a.m.

CMPD said George Lee Wingo died at the scene. The driver, Marlin Broadnax, stopped and stayed at the scene until police arrived.

Police said Wingo was not crossing within a designated crossing area. Witnesses told police they had to swerve to avoid hitting him.

29-year-old man killed, relative charged
A 29-year-old man is dead and another is charged with murder following a shooting late Wednesday near Charlotte’s Druid Hills neighborhood. CMPD identified the victim as William Jerome Rann Jr.

The shooting was reported shortly after 9:30 p.m. in the 2900 block of Dogwood Avenue. When officers arrived they found a man with an apparent gunshot wound. Paramedics pronounced him dead.

Investigators identified a suspect at the scene as 29-year-old Michael Norman Smith. He was taken to police headquarters for questioning and later charged.

A CMPD spokeswoman said the suspect and victim were related.

CMPD offers tips to deter vehicle break-ins:

• Always lock your doors and roll up your windows
• Never leave valuable items in your vehicle
• Store packages in the trunk of your vehicle while shopping
• Remove items such as telephones, iPods, purses, briefcase, backpack, cash and even loose change each time you leave your vehicle.
• Park in well-lit areas at night
• Park vehicle in the driveway rather than the street
• Consider a car alarm for added protection
• Call 911 if you see any suspicious activity
