The Charlotte Symphony Orchestra seeks a talented, results-oriented Vice President of External Affairs to oversee public relations and publications and well as to steward the CSO’s work in education and the community.
About the Charlotte Symphony
Led by internationally renowned Music Director Christopher Warren-Green, the Charlotte Symphony is the largest performing arts organization in the region, supporting 58 full-time musicians in a 37-week season. Core programming includes concerts in our Classical, Pops, and Family series.

We actively nurture the next generation of musicians and music lovers through our youth education programs. We support two signature programs for young people. Project Harmony is a music and leadership program aimed at expanding the vision of what’s possible in the lives of area youth, serving nearly 200 children in East, West and Southwest Charlotte. The Charlotte Symphony Youth Orchestras offers extraordinary music education in pursuit of musical excellence. Our Youth Orchestras are inclusive, diverse and accessible to all students, regardless of financial resources.

The VP of External Affairs is a critical member of the CSO’s leadership team responsible for setting the strategic direction of the institution. S/he oversees the Symphony’s publications and public relations, youth education programs, community partnerships and engagement efforts.
The VP of External Affairs works with the CEO to develop programs and initiatives that fulfill our institutional goals, with a particular emphasis on programs that use the Symphony’s unique assets to address both challenges and opportunities in Charlotte. S/he directly manages communication activities that promote, enhance and develop the CSO brand.
The successful candidate will have five-seven years of related work experience. The ideal candidate has a demonstrated record advancing brand through strategic and mission-aligned public relations and visibility efforts.
Experience designing and managing community engagement activities in a non-profit environment is critical. An understanding of and connection to the Charlotte community, with emphasis on youth, the elderly, and immigrant communities is highly desirable. Ability to work with people of a wide variety of ages, abilities, and cultural backgrounds is essential.
Excellent editing, writing and proofreading ability required. Strong communications skills necessary Strategic thinker with knowledge of the nonprofit and philanthropic sectors with an
understanding of, and a genuine passion for, cultural equity is a must.
S/he will be able to handle multiple deadlines, manage competing priorities, and work effectively under pressure. Track record of managing and developing a team is important. A college degree is required.
Salary range: $55,000-62,000 annually, commensurate with experience.
