The Town of Matthews Fire and EMS Department is seeking applicants for career Firefighter / EMT positions. Salary range for fulltime career FF/EMTs is $36,794 – $57,029, with starting range of $36,794 – $46,911 depending on qualifications. This is a competitive process. About Matthews Fire & EMS:
Located just east of Charlotte NC, the Town of Matthews Fire & EMS is a combination department serving a population of approximately 33,500 people and a 17-square mile district. The department staffs two stations and operates 2 engines, ladder, heavy rescue, and 2 EMS squads. In 2019 the department responded to approximately 3850 calls for service. In 2020 the department received a Class 2 ISO rating.

Career members are assigned to one of three operations shifts, working a modified 24/48 schedule and a 28-day work cycle, averaging 56-hours per workweek. Volunteer members supplement the career staff on a daily basis under a blended staffing model.

Firefighter / EMT job dimensions:
Firefighters respond to fire and EMS incidents, performing all typical fire suppression and rescue operations, and providing emergency medical care at an EMT basic level. Firefighters function as a member of an assigned crew under the direction of a company officer.

Firefighters inspect and maintain equipment, apparatus, and facilities; participate in company training, meetings, and drills; and maintain physical fitness through participation in regular exercise.

Firefighters participate in community risk reduction activities such as pre-incident planning, hydrant maintenance, and public education efforts.

On occasion and as qualified, firefighters drive, pump, and operate fire apparatus, as well as perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Firefighter Applicant Qualifications:
Candidates must possess the following before they will be considered for hiring:
High School graduate or GED
North Carolina / IFSAC Firefighter certification
North Carolina or National Registry Emergency Medical Technician certification with reciprocity in North Carolina.
Preferred Qualifications:
North Carolina / IFSAC Firefighter II or Firefighter Certification based on the 2013 NFPA 1001 or later standard.
North Carolina / IFSAC Technical Rescuer
North Carolina / IFSAC Driver/Operator

Out-of-state candidates must provide confirmation of certification reciprocity with North Carolina, obtained through NCOSFM and NCOEMS.
Applications will be screened as they are received. Applicants chosen to move forward following application review will be contacted by email and scheduled for a skills assessment test and interview date. The earlier an application is received, the greater the flexibility in scheduling options.

Candidates chosen to move forward in the process will participate in a multi-phase assessment center. Assessment center phases will include assessment of physical ability, aka “MPAT”, demonstration of basic firefighter certification practical skills, a structured panel interview, and an on-line job ‘suitability’ assessment. Further details of the assessment center and a schedule of events will be emailed to the candidate once an assessment date is confirmed.

Selection:
A candidate hiring pool will be established. Selected candidates will receive a ‘conditional offer’ after which they must pass a drug screen, background check, polygraph, NFPA 1582 physical, and psychological evaluation.

Appointment decisions shall be based on, but shall not be limited to, performance during the assessment process, review of qualifications and certifications obtained, reference and employment checks. The Fire Chief reserves the authority to appoint any applicant who meets the minimum published qualifications and who demonstrates satisfactory performance in the assessment process. This is a competitive process.

Newly hired members will serve a minimum of 6-months new hire evaluation period. All safety-sensitive positions are subject to random drug testing.

Essential Function of the Job
Responding to fires, rescue and emergency medical situations; driving and operating emergency apparatus and equipment; maintaining equipment and facilities; performing specialized tasks or programs, rescuing victims, suppressing fires; performing clean up; participating in continuing training.

Responds to alarms, drives assigned apparatus to required location.
Operates pumps and apparatus at fire scene; regulates water pressure to ensure required pressure at nozzle.
Responds to alarms and assists in the suppression of fires, including rescue, entry, ventilating, salvage work, containment of hazardous materials, traffic control, crowd control, motor vehicle accidents, etc.
Responds to emergency medical calls; assesses patients and provides basic and advanced life support treatment for persons, if required; extricates victims trapped in motor vehicles or entangled in machinery; lowers patients from high places or raises them from holes or ravines; transports the sick and elderly.
Helps inspect and preplan firefighting strategies.
Assists in maintaining fire apparatus and equipment and cleaning fire station and grounds.
Inspects, cleans and maintains fire hose, pumps, hydrants, and related equipment.
Maintains required physical fitness through exercise, jogging, weightlifting, walking, etc.
Responds to alarms and assists in the suppression of fires, including rescue, entry, ventilating and salvage work.
Provides stand-by coverage when volunteers are unavailable.
Enters structures, searches for and rescues occupants.
Performs other firefighting and related emergency tasks consistent with appropriate NFPA standards for position.
Checks, tests and paints fire hydrants.
Conducts station tours and explains equipment to public.
Participates in continuing training and instruction programs by individual study of technical material and attendance at scheduled drills and classes, sometimes outside of regularly scheduled duty hours.
Performs related tasks as required.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
General knowledge of fire equipment maintenance techniques, procedures and mechanics as applied to fire suppression and pump operation; thorough knowledge of the operation and maintenance of firefighting equipment and apparatus and ability to operate such equipment and apparatus safely and effectively; ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions; ability to establish and maintain effective working relations with superiors, associates, Fire & EMS volunteers, and the general public.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Requires graduation from high school or equivalent. Considerable experience in the Fire & EMS service is preferred. Possession of an appropriate driver’s license valid in the State of North Carolina. Obtain North Carolina certification for Emergency Vehicle Driving within six months of employment. Possession of North Carolina certification as Firefighter II and Emergency Medical Technician. Obtain Technical Rescuer Certification within eighteen months of employment. Must meet and maintain all minimum state and local training and education requirements for the position.
