Modernism + Film: Precise Poetry of Lina Bo Bardi

Thursday, April 27, 2017 - 04/27/2017
The Bechtler Museum of Modern Art screens the film Precise Poetry of Lina Bo Bardi (53 minutes), April 27 during the Modernism + Film program.

On the eve of Lina Bo Bardi's 100th birthday, colleagues and close friends recount personal events and the sociopolitical constrictions that would build and be written into the timelessness, precision, and perfections of her work. Spoken in protégées with English subtitle, this film is based on the famous Italian-Brazilian architect Lina Bo Bardi and how she created poetry through architecture. A poem uses aesthetic and rhythmic qualities of language; it is meant to evoke meaning and emotions.

A poem has a particular structure that is designed to uphold a point of view, architecture can be just as such, and as far as Bo Bardi was concerned it was. She brought each building to life with various aspects of aesthetics and designs. Her designs come to life with the energy, diversity, and creativity produced by the people who inhabit them. The film explores her most important architectural projects in São Paulo and Salvador da Bahia and draws the question of what remains of a person in the work they leave behind.

Born in 1914 in Rome, Bo Bardi eventually formed her roots in Brazil. She devoted her work life to promoting the social and cultural aspect of potential architecture and design after her work space was destroyed during an explosion in WWII. Bo Bardi was more than an architect, she was a designer of sets, furniture, and jewelry, she was also an editor, illustrator, and curator. Her enthusiasm for wanting to integrate the values of the Modern Movement with popular culture was game changing.

An event reception with a cash-only bar and free light bites begins at 6 p.m. in the Bechtler lobby followed by the presentation and film screening at 7 p.m. in the Wells Fargo Auditorium.
