Last summer, QCity Metro noted a nationwide trend that was driving up the car-theft rate in Charlotte.

Inspired by TikTok videos, people were using USB cables to hotwire Kias and Hyundais.

The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department reported a double-digit spike in auto thefts, fueled in part by the so-called “Kia Challenge.”

Why it matters: The software upgrade is available for eligible vehicles until June 2023, so check with your dealer.
