Graduation is months away for most high school seniors, and the time to make their college decision is quickly approaching. 

Many of these decisions are affected by the cost of tuition and scholarships that are awarded. 

There are a number of local HBCU alumni chapters offering scholarships to high school seniors and matriculating college students.

Here are a few listed below:

North Carolina A&T

Deadline to apply: Feb. 1

NC A&T Charlotte alumni chapter will award eight $2,000 scholarships for the Fall semester of 2023.

An eligible applicant must:

  • Be a graduating high school senior
  • Be a legal resident of Mecklenburg, Cabarrus, Gaston, Chester, Rowan, Union County, N.C., or Chester County or York County, S.C.
  •  Have a 3.0 minimum GPA (weighted)

Application Requirements

  • Completed application
  • Resume (typed)
  • Transcript
  • 200-400 word Essay
  • Copy of N.C. A&T SU Acceptance Letter

N.C. Central University

Deadline to apply: March 15 

The NCCU Charlotte alumni chapter will award scholarships up to $2000 for deserving students from our local area. Students must meet the eligibility requirements and be committed to NCCU for the Fall semester of 2023.

An eligible applicant must:

  •  be a resident of Mecklenburg, Cabarrus, Gaston or Union Counties.
  •  have a minimum 2.5 GPA.
  • Must be committed to North Carolina Central University for the Fall 2023 semester.

Application Requirements

  • Submit an official transcript.
  • Two letters of recommendation

*Recommendations CANNOT be from a family member or friend.

Recommendation letters should be emailed to nccucharlottescholarship@gmail.com with subject line to read as follows:

ā€œRECOMMENDATION LETTER FOR SCHOLARSHIP APPLICANT – (APPLICANT NAME).ā€

St. Augustine University

Deadline to apply: June 30

The St. Augustine University Charlotte alumni chapter will award a $500 scholarship, with the possibility of annual renewal, to eligible students who plan to enroll at Saint Augustine’s University during the next school year and/or to undergraduate students who are presently enrolled.

An eligible applicant must:

  • Have applied to, have been accepted to, and/or be a full-time student at the University (in good academic standing).
  • Have high moral values, a record of high academic achievement and leadership ability.

Application Requirements

  • Fill out an application and email to candeenc1908@gmail.com.
  • Application should include a copy of high school transcript with SAT/ACT scores. A college transcript, required for matriculating applicants only.
  • One letter of recommendation (must be written within the last sixty days).

Winston Salem State University

Deadline to apply: TBA for Spring 2023

The scholarship award shall be made in the fall semester of the eligible academic year, pending the recipient’s enrollment at Winston-Salem State University. The award is $1,000 and will be granted to three incoming freshmen.

An eligible applicant must:

  • Be a graduating senior at an accredited high school in Charlotte-Mecklenburg or Union County
  • Have a cumulative weighted GPA of 2.8 or higher
  • Volunteer at the Charlotte/Q.C. Rams Chapter Golf Tournament. (The tournament date is TBD.)

*Applicants must NOT have received a full or partial scholarship from WSSU.
