Last night, Charlotte City Council approved $2 million for Charlotte Rescue Mission. The funds come from the Coronavirus State and Local Recovery Fund and are part of the city’s overall $4 million investment in Charlotte Rescue Mission.
The funds will support construction of a new building to help men experiencing homelessness and addiction.
Last spring, Charlotte Rescue Mission broke ground on Miracle at Cedar Street, a new men’s shelter. The building, funded partly by a $500,000 donation from the Lowe’s Foundation, will be ADA-compliant and include an elevator.
It will replace the organization’s 100-year-old building on 907 W. 1st Street.
The $2 million will replace a previous donation from the Department of Housing and Urban Development’s HOME Investment Partnerships Program (HOME-ARP).
Other city council updates:
- More money for affordable housing: An additional $1,694,000 HOME Investment Partnership Program approved for Lakewood Apartments and East Town homes.
- Assistance with water utilities: $1,936,602.82 from the Coronavirus State and Local Fiscal Recovery Fund was approved for Charlotte water utility assistance and displacement support.
- Car theft warning: In its end of year crime report, CMPD showed a 20% increase in vehicle thefts. According to Deputy Chief David Robinson, the increase is, in large part, because of a TikTok trend that involved stealing a Kia and/or Hyundai. Robinson said eight out ten stolen cars are a Kia or Hyundai. Robinson advised that owners of these cars take precautionary actions such as getting a club for steering wheels, parking in well lit areas and using car alarms.
