An armed subject experiencing a mental health crisis fired a gunshot in the presence of Charlotte-Mecklenburg police officers on Tuesday morning.

According to a tweet from CMPD, around 6:30 a.m., officers responded to a mental health crisis call for service at the 8700 block of University Executive Park Drive. They arrived to the scene with MEDIC and located a male subject in need of medical attention.

Police say that when officers tried to de-escalate the situation, a struggle ensued with the subject. During the struggle, the subject reportedly pulled out a handgun and fired a shot, striking himself in the leg.

Officers tased him and MEDIC gave him medical care.

The subject was transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

No officers was injured or discharged their gun on the scene, according to CMPD.

The subject’s gun was recovered at the scene.
