A 32-year-old man was in custody Saturday, charged in a deadly shooting in southeast Charlotte.

Authorities identified the victim as Reginald Lawrence, 46.

Lawrence died in the parking lot of an apartment complex on Pebblestone Drive, where he was shot just before 10 p.m. Friday.

Witnesses told police the shooter fled to a nearby apartment, but after officers evacuated nearby units, a SWAT team was unable to locate the suspect.

Police later announced the arrest of Carlton Stevon Benbow. In addition to the murder charge, Benbow also was charged with assault with a deadly weapon with the intent to kill, possession of a stolen firearm, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department did not say what led to the killing – the city’s 102nd criminal homicide of 2019.
