Black royalty reigns supreme on the latest digital cover of Essence Magazine. The October edition features Miss America Nia Franklin, Miss USA Cheslie Kryst and Miss Teen USA Kaliegh Garris. For the first time, Black women hold all three titles.

Two pageant winners have ties to the Tar Heel State. Kryst is from Charlotte while Franklin hails from Winston-Salem. We covered Kryst after she earned her title in May. After her win, Kryst relocated from the Queen City to New York City.

For the magazine’s “This is America” cover shoot, New York City fashion designer Dapper Dan dressed the ladies in Gucci. Inside, the ladies donned elaborate church hats, do-rags, kufis and headscarves for the feature titled, “Our Crowns, Our Glory.”
