Fight between two women ends in death for 51-year-old

A fight between two women ended late Thursday with one dead and the other questioned as a suspect in the killing, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department reported.

The homicide happened at a residence in the 3600 block of Fagan Way, just west of Beatties Ford Road.

When police got there, they found a female victim inside the residence. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities later identified the woman as 51-year-old Lillie Mae Stewart.

Based on initial reports, investigators believe that Steward and a “female suspect” were at the home along with a male witness when an argument broke out between the victim and suspect, who knew one another. The confrontation escalated, and at some point the suspect and Steward both went into the front yard, where Steward received “traumatic injuries,” CMPD said.

Authorities late Thursday had not confirmed a cause of death, but neighbors told police they heard shots fired during the encounter.

No charges were announced as of early Friday, and CMPD did not immediately release the suspect’s name.
