A 16-year-old Garinger High School student was in critical condition late Thursday after he was stuck by a car in east Charlotte. Because of the student’s age, authorities withheld his name.
The incident was reported at 2:22 p.m. in the 900 block of Eastway Drive.
When police arrived, they found the student lying in the roadway with visible injuries. Authorities said the student was attempting to cross the street in a marked crosswalk when he was struck by a 2015 Acura. The incident happened in a designated school zone, where the posted speed limit is 25 miles per hour.
Witnesses told police the driver had the green light when the student walked into the street and was struck as he neared the center median.
The student’s injuries were described as life threatening. The driver was not charged, pending an ongoing investigation.
