Mecklenburg County Sheriff Garry McFadden wants to make his office more accessible to the public. So on Saturday, he kicked off a monthly meet-and-greet called “Snack with a Sheriff.”

The first event was held outside a Chick-fil-A restaurant on South Boulevard.

Tonya Rivens, a spokeswoman for the Sheriff’s Office, called the event “very positive.” She said McFadden was inspired by the national “Coffee With a Cop” program, which seeks to break down barriers between police officers and the communities they are employed to serve.

Rivens said McFadden wants residents to get to know the Sheriff’s Office, even as he listens to hear community concerns.

In a statement, McFadden said: “The opportunity to meet citizens in a nontraditional setting and have dialogue about their concerns will promote trust, respect and cooperation in our community.”

McFadden’s next meet-and-greet is scheduled for July 12 at Cuzzo’s Cuisine, 3418 Tuckaseegee Rd.
