Black people and Black culture have influenced many of the world’s popular music genres. Every June, we celebrate African American Music Appreciation Month. Although first proclaimed in 1979 as Black Music Month by President Jimmy Carter, it wasn’t formally recognized by the federal government until 2000. In 2009, it was renamed African American Music Appreciation Month.
We can go on about all of the great African American artists, musicians and writers. While we don’t have to limit our appreciation to a month, we’re spending the next few weeks spotlighting talented individuals in our Carolina backyards.
Check back throughout the month for the updated list of features.
