“Big announcement” regarding Excelsior Club.

Qcitymetro

A new nonprofit called Preserve Mecklenburg has scheduled a Thursday press conference to talk about the historic Excelsior Club, but they didn’t say what the “big announcement” would be. (Qcitymetro will be there, so follow us on FacebookInstagram and Twitter.)

Hint: The announcement is scheduled for 4 p.m. at the Charlotte Museum of History on Shamrock Drive. Officials scheduled to attend include Michael Sullivan, a Preserve Mecklenburg board member; Mary Newsom, board chair at Charlotte Museum of History; and Dan Morrill of the Charlotte Landmark Commission.

The Excelsior Club was founded in 1944 by Charlotte businessman Jimmie McKee and was for years the leading social club for African Americans in the Southeast, regularly hosting political meetings as well as leading entertainers such as Nat ‘King’ Cole and Louis Armstrong. The building, which sits on Beatties Ford Road, has since fallen into disrepair and was put up for sale by its current owner, state Rep. Carla Cunningham.
