Man shot and killed at Smokey Joe’s Cafe in east Charlotte

Update: CMPD has charged Jamie Lord Harris with murder and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon in the death of John Michael Songer.


Police are investigating a homicide after a man was shot and killed last Saturday while standing on the patio of an east Charlotte bar.

The shooting, reported at 11:40 p.m., happened outside Smokey Joe’s Café at 510 Briar Creek Road.

When officers arrived, they found an adult male suffering from a gunshot wound. MEDIC pronounced him dead at the scene.

Based on their initial investigation, police have determined that someone fired several shots into the parking lot and toward the building. The victim, whose name was not immediately released, was standing outside the building in a patio area when he was struck by a bullet.

CMPD offered no motive for the shooting and did not indicate whether the victim was the shooter’s intended target.
