Crowds packed the Irwin Belk complex at Johnson C. Smith University on Nov. 11, for the inaugural Big HBCU Classic Battle of the Bands. Alumni, fans and band enthusiasts braved the chilly weather to watch performances from Benedict College, North Carolina A&T University, North Carolina Central University, South Carolina State University and Winston-Salem State University. The event looks to fill a void left when organizers of the Queen City Battle of the Bands moved their competition to Houston.

An estimated $50,000 from tickets sales and sponsorship funds will go to the participating HBCUs band programs.
