Not long ago, we proclaimed that University City has Charlotte’s best options for Jamaican food. It didn’t account for food trucks, otherwise Jamaican Jerk NC would’ve surely made the list. Owner Shawn Nelson’s passion for cooking goes back to his younger years in Jamaica where he sold food to the townspeople and large groups. Although it’s only been six years since Nelson moved to the U.S., he’s making a name for himself in the Charlotte area. Customers love Nelson’s signature wood-grilled chicken, but the jerk sauce is the showstopper. You can spot the truck donning his country’s flag at most food truck events, and soon Nelson will expand to offer extended menu options for pick-up and delivery.
Signature item(s): wood-grilled jerk chicken
Healthy options and/or vegetarian-friendly items: steamed cabbage, curry chik’n (tofu), rice & beans, mac & cheese
