About the hit revival

Based on the 1982 Pulitzer Prize-winning novel by Alice Walker, the musical follows the transformative journey of Celie Johnson, who transcends abuse, loss, and separation from her beloved sister with the help of friends Shug and Sofia. In 1985, Steven Spielberg brought Walker’s characters to the big screen. The cult classic featured Whoopi Goldberg in her film debut as Celie and also starred Danny Glover, Margaret Avery, Willard E. Pugh, Oprah Winfrey (also in her film debut), Adolph Caesar, and Rae Dawn Chong.

The original Broadway production garnered 11 Tony Award nominations in 2006. The revival has earned its own accolades, including the 2016 Tony Award for Best Musical Revival. “The Color Purple has been born again, and its conversion is a glory to behold,” wrote The New York Times.

With a soul-raising score of jazz, gospel, ragtime, and blues, The Color Purple gives an exhilarating new spirit to this Pulitzer Prize-winning story, declares the Blumenthal.
