On the town with Toni

Looking for something fun to do in Charlotte this weekend? Check out Toni Baker-Tyson's weekly entertainment picks. It's fun for grown folks.

Last weekend I took my first ride on the LYNX Blue Line extension, which run between the University area and uptown Charlotte.

I guess I had to see it to believe it.

Well, the extension is in force, and I love it!

Every time I see that train pass by in the University area, I chuckle out loud. I remember when I moved here from New Jersey back in the fall of 1989 — about the only things I could find in the University area were Kerr Drugstore, Food Lion, a movie theater by Hilton Hotel, Dunkin Donuts and Herlocker Restaurant.

Although I often struggle with what I love and dislike about Charlotte, I’m all aboard about the train. I suggest you hop on ASAP. I’m finally convinced that Charlotte is on its way.

Actress Karyn Parsons was in town last weekend to showcase her animated films for children at the Harvey B. Gantt Center. Films are my passion, so I volunteered for a portion of the event and then got to enjoy some of the films. This was a well-organized event. I hate it if you missed out.

Are you taking full advantage of the many types of workshops held at Charlotte Mecklenburg Libraries? This week, while visiting the University branch, I took a free class that focused on how to save and protect money and why it’s important. If you haven’t done so, check out one of the local branches around the city for free adult classes.
