What’s Happening, Charlotte?

It’s not often that we focus on events for children, but here’s a Saturday event we highly recommend.

Harvey B. Gantt Center will host its first children’s film festival, featuring the animated works of actress Karyn Parsons.

Who is Karen Parsons, you ask?

If you came of age watching “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air,” you know her as Hillary Banks. If you’re a fan of the 2000 comedy film “The Ladies Man,” you know her as Julie Simmons.

Her short films for children all spotlight little-known African Americans who overcame long odds to accomplish great things.

I talked with Parsons by phone and published this article earlier this week.

Wanna get away?

The bus will depart from Mosaic Village (1635 W. Trade Street) at 6 a.m. and return between 10 p.m. and 11 p.m.
