What’s happening, Charlotte?

Not every stage play leaves a lasting impression with me. “The Mountaintop,” Katori Hall’s brilliant re-imagining of Martin Luther King Jr.’s final night on earth, was one that did.”

I’ve not seen the Actor’s Theater of Charlotte production currently on stage at Hadley Theater at Queens University. I saw a different production in 2014, at Booth Playhouse.

Even though the play is total fiction, it made me ponder King in a deeper way. For the first time, perhaps, I reflected on the civil rights icon as a flesh-and-blood human – a man who wrestled with all of the concerns and temptations of any other man.

Not everyone agrees with my assessment, of course. In 2014, Blumenthal Performing Arts heard from angry theater-goers who found the play demeaning of King’s legacy.

I respectfully disagree.

Theater, at its best, should lead us to think in new ways. So love it or hate it, “The Mountaintop” achieves that lofty goal.

The play runs through March 21. Here’s a link for dates and tickets.

Enjoy your weekend.
