Calvin Anthony Smartt III, 32, was killed last Sunday when he lost control of the car he has driving and crashed in northwest Charlotte.

Police were sent to the scene at 11:11 p.m. When officers arrived they found a 2006 Honda Civic in the 5100 block of Brookshire Boulevard, between Hovis Road and Lawton Road.

The car had left the roadway and gone down an embankment. MEDIC pronounced the driver dead at the scene.

An initial investigation found that Smartt was traveling outbound on Brookshire Boulevard at a high rate of speed when he crossed the median into oncoming lanes before going off the roadway and down the embankment. The car struck a concrete barrier and a fence, at which point Smartt was ejected.

Smartt was not wearing a seatbelt. CMPD said alcohol may have been a factor in the crash.

No other passengers or vehicles were involved.
