Police suspect alcohol in fatal wreck

Police say alcohol was a factor in a fatal wreck that happened early Tuesday in the Durid Hills neighborhood of northeast Charlotte.

Authorities withhold the victim’s name pending notification of family members.

The wreck was reported at 12:35 a.m. in the 1200 block of Atando Avenue, near Timeplanner Drive.

When officers arrived, they found a 1996 Buick just off the roadway. Paramedics pronounced the driver dead at the scene.

A passenger in the car — Brenda Jean Kearse, 54 – was taken to Presbyterian Hospital with serious injuries. Two other passengers — Shakeela Monique Williams, 25, and Jermaine Lamont Walls, 24 – were treated at the scene.

Investigators said the car was traveling east on Atando Avenue when the drive, who authorities suspect was impaired, lost control. The car struck a tree and overturned.
