Police: 14-month-old dies following 2-car crash near uptown Charlotte

A 14-month-old girl who was not properly secured in a child-safety seat died Wednesday following a two-car crash just north of uptown Charlotte.

The crash happened in the 1500 block of N. Graham Street near the Optimist Park neighborhood.

Police did not name of the victim but said charges were pending relating to the child’s death.

The child was ridding in a car driven by 33-year-old Dora Del Carmen Sosa, who was badly injured in the crash.

The driver of the second car, 43-year-old David John Collins Jr., was also seriously injured.

Police say Sosa was driving north on Graham Street when she swerved to miss a large truck that has stopped in front of her. Her car continued into oncoming traffic and collided head-on with a car driven by Collins.

Sosa was not wearing a seatbelt, according to investigators. The child in her car was in an infant carrier that was not being used as designed, and the child was not properly restrained, investigators said.
