I knew at an early age that baking cakes was not in my future, but eating them was something I was destined to be great at.
I love sweets, which made National Cake Day (Nov. 26) right up my alley.
I visited the Cosmic Cookie Bakery to put my cake-eating skills to work. Originally Kai’s Kookies, this black-owned bakery is tucked away in north Charlotte on Hankins Road, just north of W. WT Harris Boulevard.
The sweets I sampled there made me want to celebrate cake day every day. I ordered a slice of banana pudding cheesecake, red velvet cheesecake, a caramel latte cupcake, a toffee coconut cookie and a slice of sweet potato cake. (I did say I was good at eating cake, remember.)
I expected the sweet potato cake to have a dark orange color, similar to a sweet potato pie, but it more resembled the coloring of carrot cake. The ground nutmeg and cinnamon stood out, while raisins added a sugary burst of sweetness with each forkfull.
While my taste buds and brain were discussing whether I was eating sweet potato pie or sweet potato cake, my sweet tooth was in its happy place.
Everything I sampled was impressive.
Although National Cheesecake Day isn’t until July 30, I can’t resist talking about the banana pudding cheesecake. Imagine dipping your spoon into a bowl of banana pudding then pulling it out and putting it in your mouth. That was the taste sensation I experienced as a savored each ingredient used to make this Southern dessert. A vanilla wafer cookie crowned the cheesecake, while it sat on a vanilla wafer crust. It truly tastes as good as it looks.
If you missed National Cake Day, don’t worry; February is National Cake Month. In fact there are 15 days on the calendar celebrating the cake, starting with Chocolate Cake Day on January 27 and ending with National Sachertorte Day (a chocolate cake originating in Vienna, Austria) on December 5.
