Man killed in W. Charlotte when shooters open fire near school

CMPD is investigating a killing that happened Thursday afternoon in northwest Charlotte.

The incident was reported shortly after 1 p.m. in the 2400 block of Kendall Drive. When officers arrived they found a man with an apparent gunshot wound. Paramedics pronounced him dead at the scene.

According to published reports, the shooters got out of a car an opened fire on the victim, later identified as 41-year-old Jay Jevon Phifer.

Police said the shooting happened near West Charlotte High School but was not related to the school. As a precaution, the school was put on lockdown while officers searched for the suspects.

CMPD did not say whether investigators had identified suspects or motive for the shooting. The department tweeted that up to $5,000 was offered for information that leads to an arrest in the case.
