Police arrest UNC Charlotte student at home where shooting happened

Police said the 20-year-old student was arrested on drug charges.

Police arrested a UNC Charlotte student on drug charges Thursday at a home just south of the university where a shooting happened.

When police searched the home in the 1300 block of Bonnie Lane, the found about 4.5 pounds of marijuana, three rifles, two shotguns, and two BB pistols, according to CMPD.

Blaise Bennett, 20, who police said lived at the home, was charged with two counts of felony possession of marijuana and possession of marijuana paraphernalia.

Police were initially called to the home to investigate a shooting. The victim was taken to Carolinas Medical Center with critical injuries and was later stabilized.

Police said two suspects robbed the victim of a gun and cash then fled in a car identified possibly as a grey Nissan Altima. Detectives determined that a drug transaction had occurred at the home involving the victim and the two suspects.

The shooting was reported at 12:34 p.m. Police did not release the victim’s name.
