Charlotte-Mecklenburg police won’t charge a security guard who shot and killed a man inside a sweepstakes business, the department announced Monday.
CMPD said 32-year-old Julian Anthony Harris and another man were attempting to rob Queen City Skillsville in the 5600 block of Albemarle Road just after midnight on Aug. 23 when the guard shot him. Police said Harris was pointing a gun at a store employee when the guard fired his weapon, striking Harris.
Both suspects ran from the building, police said. Harris was later found dead in a wooded area behind the business. The second suspect had not been caught as of Aug. 28.
After reviewing the case, detectives ruled the killing a justified homicide.
The Mecklenburg district attorney’s office will review CMPD’s decision and decide whether it will level charges against the guard.
CMPD said the security guard cooperated with the investigation and was released after being questioned.
