A Charlotte man was charged with murder after his wife died from burns she suffered during an alleged assault.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg police identified the suspect as Gary James McGill, 51. He was charged in the death of his wife, Archie McGill, 47.

According to a CMPD report, Archie McGill suffered severe burns on May 21 at a home in the 6400 block of Leafcrest Lane, just south of Archdale Road in south Charlotte. She was taken to Carolinas Medical Center and was later transferred to the Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Forsyth County.

Police investigating the incident initially charged Gary McGill with domestic violence, attempted murder, malicious use of incendiary device, burning personal property, and carelessness with fire.

Authorities added a murder charge on June 3, when Archie McGill died. An autopsy found that she died from burn-related injuries.

Gary McGill was arrested today by CMPD’s violent criminal apprehension team and booked in Mecklenburg jail.
