An early morning crash on the John Belk Freeway has claimed one life, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department reported Wednesday.
Authorities withheld the victim’s name pending notification of family members. No one else was in the car, police said.
The crash was reported at 1:49 a.m. and involved a 2005 Toyota Avalon that struck a protective barrier for a concrete pillar that supports the E. 7th Street Bridge.
The driver, described as a white male, was not wearing a seat belt and died at the scene. Investigators said speed was a factor in the crash.
