Charlotte-Mecklenburg police have charged a 26-year-old man in the stabbing death of his mother, 50-year-old Marcella Lightner Thrash.

The suspect, Dionte Marquel Long, was in Mecklenburg jail facing a murder charge.

The killing was reported early Monday in the 5600 block of Hubbard Point Drive, which is near W. Sugar Creek Road and W. WT Harris Boulevard in the University City Division.

When officers reached the scene, they found a female victim, later identified as Thrash, with stab wounds. Paramedics pronounced her dead at the scene.

A man described by police as a “subject of interest” also was at the home. He was taken to CMPD headquarters for questioning. That man on Tuesday was identified as Long, the victim’s son.

CMPD has not said what led to the killing. Mecklenburg jail records show no previous arrest for Long
