
UPDATE: Charlotte-Mecklenburg police on Thursday identified the victim as David Earl Brannon, 46.
CMPD also said detectives had made an arrest in the case, charging 19-year-old Austin Kelligan with murder. Killigan was identified at the scene and went to CMPD headquarters for questioning, a department spokesman said. He was booked in Mecklenburg jail after being charged.
Police offered no details about what led to the incident or whether Killigan was driving the car that struck Brannon.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg police are tying to determine what happened to a man who was struck by a vehicle and killed on Interstate 85 late Wednesday.
The incident was reported shortly after 10 p.m. in the southbound lane near Exit 4. Paramedics pronounced the man dead at the scene.
Based on a preliminary investigation, police believe the man may have fought with a “known suspect” before he was struck.
CMPD withheld the victim’s name pending notification of family members.
