A 62-year-old man died early Sunday after he was struck by a sport-utility vehicle while walking in a roadway in northeast Charlotte near University City.

Police identified the victim as David Victor Miller.

According to an initial police report, Miller was walking in the 6500 block of Reagan Drive shortly after 8 p.m. Saturday when he was struck by a GMC Yukon. He died hours later at Carolina’s Medical Center.

A preliminary investigation indicates that the driver, 42-year-old Sharaine Harris, was traveling south on Regan Drive when she saw a pedestrian in her lane. Harris told police that she swerved left to avoid striking the man, who also moved left into the path of the GMC.

After the collision, Harris stopped and called 911.

Police said Miller, wearing dark-colored clothing, may have been under the influence of alcohol as he walked in the roadway, which had no sidewalks, crosswalks or working street lights.

Neither Harris nor a 14-year-old passenger in her vehicle was injured.
