A substitute teacher at Merry Oaks Elementary school was arrested Thursday and charged with sexually assaulting two students there.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police identified the suspect as John Rader, 34.

CMPD became aware of the accusations after the department was notified by a Merry Oaks school resource officer, who identified a female student as the alleged victim. The student told police that Rader had forcibly fondled her on multiple occasions.

A second female student later made similar allegations, according to police.

“Additional information and evidence gathered during the investigation led detectives in signing warrants for Rader’s arrest,” a CMPD spokeswoman said Thursday in a statement.

Rader was arrested at his home. He was charged with six counts of indecent liberties with a child and two counts of indecent liberties with a student by a teacher.

CMPD is investigating to determine whether other students might have had improper contact with Rader.

Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600.
