A 27-year-old woman was shot and killed Wednesday afternoon just north of uptown Charlotte on N. Tryon Street.

CMP identified the victim as Brittany Carelock.

Police were called to the scene at 3:33 p.m. to investigate a report of an assault with a deadly weapon. When officers arrived, the found the Carelock with an apparent gunshot wound. Paramedics pronounced her dead at the scene.

According to the sheriff’s website, Carelock had been arrested at least 10 times in Mecklenburg County since 2014 on charges including possession and selling marijuana, possession of cocaine, assault with a deadly weapon and possession of a firearm by a felon. Her last arrest, on Sept. 15, was for communicating threats.

The shooting happened in an area known for a volatile mix of drug deals and homeless residents.

A CMPD spokesman did not release information about a suspect or possible motive but said the shooter and the victim apparently knew one another.
