A woman suspected of having a “medical event” while driving on Central Avenue, which may have caused her to crash into a CATS bus, died Sunday at Carolinas Medical Center.

Police identified the driver as Karen Frierson, 54.

According to CMPD, the incident happened shortly before 4:39 p.m. in the 900 block of Central Avenue when Frierson, who was driving a 2011 Ford Escape, crashed into the back of a 2013 Ford Fusion that had slowed for traffic, then struck the car a second time.

Frierson’s car continued along Central Avenue then ran into the back of a CATS bus that had stopped at a traffic light. The bus as carrying 13 passengers.

Frierson and a passenger in her car were taken to CMC-Main, where Frierson died a short time later.

Two passengers on the bus were treated at the hospital for injuries described as non-life threatening.

Neither the CATS driver nor the driver of the Ford Fusion was injured, police said.
