Police are investigating a fatal crash that happened Wednesday evening just north of uptown Charlotte.

Authorities withheld the victim’s name pending notification of family members.

According to CMPD, the crash was reported at 6:50 p.m. in the 2900 block of Boxmeer Drive, near Statesville Avenue in the Derita community.  Police said the car, a 1997 Mazda MX-5 Miata, run off the roadway, struck an embankment, and caught fire.

Aside from the driver, no one else was in the car, CMPD said.

Investigators do not believe that speed was a contributing factor.
