A 42-year-old woman died Wednesday when she was struck by a car on W. Sugar Creek Road in northeast Charlotte.

Police identified the victim as Mary Ann Collins.

According to initial reports, the incident happened at 7:22 p.m. in the 600 block of W. Sugar Creek Road.

Police said the driver, Moises Guzman, 47, was operating a 1999 Acura when he saw a pedestrian run in front of his car. He swerved but couldn’t avoid striking Collins, who died at the scene.

Collins was not using a designated pedestrian crossing and was wearing dark clothing at the time of the crash, police said, adding that speed and alcohol do not appear to be a factor for the driver.

Anyone with information about this crash is asked to contact Detective S. Williams with the CMPD Major Crash Investigation Unit at 704-432-2169 or Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600.
