Charlotte-Mecklenburg police arrested a man they suspect of being involved in a 1995 burglary and attempted sexual assault in southwest Charlotte.

Authorities identified the suspect as 49-year-old Kenneth Alvin McIllwaine.

According to a CMPD spokeswoman, McIllwaine was arrested Monday and charged with burglary, attempted rape, and robbery with a dangerous weapon. He was booked in the Mecklenburg jail.

The attack happened on Oct. 21, 1995. An elderly woman told police an unknown male forced his way into her home and, during a violent struggle, attempted to sexually assault her. The intruder also robbed the victim at gunpoint.

The CMPD spokeswoman said the cold case was re-opened and McIllwaine was identified as a suspect. CMPD did not indicate what evidence linked him to the crime.
