A 28-year-old woman walking along South Boulevard was struck and killed Sunday after she stepped in front of a car driven by an impaired driver, police said.
Authorities identified the victim as Kelli Sue Putman.
According to an initial police report, Putman was walking in the South End area near Remount road around 5:05 p.m. when she stepped from a sidewalk and was struck by a 2014 Audi S4. Paramedics pronounced her dead at the scene.
After striking the woman, the Audi crashed into a utility poll. Neither the driver nor any of his passengers was injured, police said.
Police identified the driver as Gregory Alan Wheeling, 40.
Police said speed and alcohol were contributing factors to the crash. Wheeling was arrested and charged with driving while impaired and aggravated felony death by vehicle.
