Fitness Trends for 2016

If you’re like many Americans – 45 percent, according to Forbes magazine – you’ve made at least one New Year’s resolution. Fitness tops the list.

So, if you resolve for a healthier 2016, the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) has compiled a list of top fitness trends.

ACSM is the world’s largest sports medicine and exercise science organization. It is made up of 50,000 fitness professionals, scientists and clinicians, so I trust its findings.

As always, check with your doctor before starting any fitness program.

1. Wearable Technology: Think high-tech gadgets such as fitness trackers. (If you missed my healthy gift guide, click here.)

2. Body Weight Training: Exercises that use the weight of your body as resistance: pull-ups, squats, push-ups.

2. High-Intensity Interval Training (HIIT): I often include HITT in my aerobics classes. This involves short spurts of activity (sprints, suicides, etc.) followed by short recovery periods.

4. Strength Training: Another item on my fitness class menu, this includes lifting dumb bells, performing planks, leg presses, etc., to build strength.

5. Educated and Experienced Fitness Professionals: Certified and knowledgeable fitness professionals are vitally important. Three of the larger and better-known fitness organizations include ACSM, American Council of Exercise (ACE), and Aerobics and Fitness Association of American (AFAA).

6. Personal Training: Kinesiology (science of human movement) is becoming a popular major for college students, translating to careers in health and personal training. A background in this field enhances personal training certification.

7. Functional Fitness: A new buzz phrase that uses old methods. In laymen’s terms, functional fitness incorporates muscles for strength training, muscular endurance, balance, coordination, agility and posture – all for ease in daily living. Functional fitness is great as our bodies age. Examples include kettle bell swings or elevated push-ups.

8. Fitness Programs for Older Adults: Health programs covet Baby Boomers who have discretionary income to stay healthy.

9. Exercise and Weight Loss: The diet industry rakes in billions of dollars annually, so look for these programs to become more popular in 2016.

10. Yoga:  This exercise (one of my favorites to build flexibility) use a series of body postures to enhance health and relaxation.
