An 18-year-old man was charged with murder Tuesday in connection with a shooting in east Charlotte over the Labor Day weekend.

Police said Quincy Dushawn McWaine was in the Mecklenburg jail on an unrelated charge when he was also charged in the death of Elias Izagirre Perez, 31.

Perez was shot and killed Sept. 6 at the Highland Trace apartment complex on Glenfiddich Drive during a extended holiday weekend that saw five homicides in the city.

According to jail records, McWaine had been arrested twice previously this year in Mecklenburg County – on Feb. 19 on charges of possession of a handgun by a minor, and on Sept. 18 on charges of carrying a concealed weapon, carrying a dangerous weapon on city property and possession of a stolen firearm.

In addition to the murder charge, McWaine also was charged Tuesday with breaking an entering, larceny after breaking and entering, conspiracy, and robbery with a dangerous weapon. A CMPD spokeswoman said detectives were able to charge McWaine in the case base on “information and evidence” gathered during the investigation.
