Qcity Shout Out!

Shout out to Vance Hamilton and Elliot Riley, owners of The Grooming Lounge, a barbershop company with locations at North Lake and Carolina Place malls. On Sunday, they gave free haircuts to elementary students who attend high-poverty schools.

Hamilton and Riley founded the Keep Your Head Up Foundation after seeing similar efforts in other cities. Hamilton said he believes that proper grooming on the outside can make a young man feel good about himself on the inside.

On Sunday from noon to 5 p.m., they set up a makeshift barbershop in the gymnasium of Walter G. Byers Elementary. Other schools they have chosen include Thomasboro Elementary and Starmount Elementary.

Hamilton and Riley said they hope to expand their efforts at local men’s shelter, where they’d not only give free haircuts but also open an “incubator shop” to provide barbering lessons to homeless men.
