Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools is looking for mentors willing to tutor students in reading. Volunteers are asked to commit to one hour, one day per week.

The district announced the program, called the North Star Reading Partners initiative, earlier this week and invited community members and local businesses to join.

“The district is dedicated to strengthening student literacy,” CMS said in a statement released to local media. “It is centering its efforts on third- and seventh-graders who are not reading on grade level and seniors who are at risk of not graduating on time.”

Teaching experience is not required, and weekly lesson plans have been designed to guide volunteers as they work with students to build reading skills.

To volunteer, go to the CMS website, www.cms.k12.nc.us. Scroll down to the Spotlight section and select “North Star Reading Partners.”
