It’s no secret that children from low-income families lag behind their peers in almost every measure of academic achievement. And it’s also no secret that a disproportionate number of those children are African American.

So when the Charlotte Mecklenburg Library approached Qcitymetro about partnering in a new childhood literacy program, we jumped at the opportunity. After all, serving our community is at the bedrock of everything we do.

The new program, “Get Ready With Words,” is designed for children age 18 months to 5 years old. It is a collaboration between Charlotte Mecklenburg Library,Discovery Place and Community School of the Arts and is funded by PNC Bank’s Grow Up Great Initiative.

Starting Sept. 1 and continuing each week throughout the school year, Qcitymetro.com will display a banner containing a vocabulary word. Children and their caregivers are encouraged to incorporate those words during a variety of family activities (found on the program’s website).
