Culinary journalist Toni-Tipton-Martin will speak about her research on the history of African-American women who have served as cooks in the United States. Ms. Tipton-Martin is the author of the forthcoming book, “The Jemima Code: 150 Timeless African American Cookbooks and Their Extraordinary Legacy,” which explores her collection of rare titles, and works from the early 19th century. Her presentation is expected to include difficult questions around race, gender and food.

Her appearance is sponsored by the Social Justice Ministry of Friendship Missionary Baptist and the UNC Center for the Study of the New South. Desserts, coffee and tea will be served.
